Organizations that lack accountability often fail to achieve goals because of many reasons and excuses. The nursing staff may interpret “almost” as good enough because they believe nobody will find anything wrong. Furthermore, they consider their objectives to be vague or difficult to attain and so decide that the best way for them is to devise plans on how best to benefit from this very system. Since the expectations are associated with it, many nurses can be reluctant to take responsibility for their actions. The notion of accountability comprises three essential components: clarity, commitment, and consequences. Nurses cannot know what patients are thinking; therefore, the written directives should be clear and concise as well as comprehensive.
