Descriptive statistics is used to summarize information by counts of data, measures of central tendency, measures of variability, measures of position, measures of relationship, and graphical presentations (Houser, 2018). The descriptive statistic I chose to interpret and explain from the hypothetical study, “Class Survey Hypothetical Data Results” is the question, “Do you have children?”. The variables were measured as nominal data, which was categorized by how many children the respondent has, with no intrinsic ordering of the categories (Houser, 2018). This forced-choice question required the respondents to select a single response from a list of the possible answers, which were: no children, one child, two children, or three or more children. Of the 65 hypothetical nursing students, 56.2% of students have no children; 24.9% of students have one child; 11.5% of students have two children; and 5.6% of students have three or more children. This study aims to understand the characteristics of students pursuing a BSN; therefore, I believe this question was important to ask to provide a snapshot of nursing students pursuing a BSN that do or do not have children in United States. Over half of the students from this study, do not have children. This result did not come as a surprise to me considering other variables of the study such as family status, age, and initial level of education.
