This is an experience of a student nurse during her material newborn clinical placement

Experience: It was my first day on the floor. I was on the delivery and labour unit. This was an amazing and enlightening experience. Together with one nurse, I assisted three vaginal deliveries and one C-section. We assisted the patient’s delivery while providing high-quality, safe care. The initial delivery went without an issue. The woman was on epidural. I obtained supplies like blankets and blue pads to assist the nurses in delivering. I also saw the nurse deliver outstanding care. When the nurse realized the patient was going to give birth, she made sure everything needed for a safe delivery was already in the room. Everything that was required, including the sterile equipment, the delivery drape and fenestrated drape, and the obstetric delivery kit that was ready to go when the doctor arrived, was set up underneath the patient. She talked the patient through the delivery. The nurse ensured she was comfortable throughout the delivery. Following delivery, the fundus had to be examined. To prevent severe bleeding in the future, the nurse and I checked then the nurse did it again after me to make sure all the blood got out. The woman desired a natural birth, and the second delivery happened quite quickly. A premature baby was born to the third patient. To deliver this baby safely, the nurses, obstetrician, NICU, and respiratory therapists had to collaborate. C-section was the last delivery. I had never seen surgery like this before. Many multidisciplinary team members, including the obstetrician, anesthesiologists, and NICU, variety of nurses collaborate to make this procedure effective. We were able to deliver safe, high-quality care because of the effective teamwork. They assess the baby’s oxygen by injecting blood from the arteries of the placenta to make sure it is not less than 7.2, which would be concerning. Following delivery, the newborn is always placed on a neonatal warm bed and given injections of vitamin K and erythmocmin ointment on the eye.
