hief Complaint Mr. Blue is an anxious-appearing, 60-year-old male who was diagnosed with COPD 6 months ago. He was discharged from the hospital a week ago and now complains that the new inhaled medications are “not working.” He also complains of a white tongue and throat and a strange taste in his mouth. Past Medical History His last hospitalization was for pneumonia; he was diagnosed at that time with congestive heart failure and prescribed home oxygen. Family history revealed positive for lung cancer in his mother. Social history: He is a 50 pack/year smoker. Medications Albuterol (bronchodilator) MDI 2 puffs q.i.d. and PRN Beclomethasone (corticosteroid) MDI 2 puffs b.i.d. What supports the statement that Mr. Blue is not using his MDIs correctly? What specific instructions would you emphasize during your patient education session? Are there any other suggestions you would make at this time to improve his health?
