A 65-year-old male patient from New Zealand, was admitted in the ICU this morning. The provisional diagnosis was: Sepsis secondary to pancreatic carcinoma, alcoholic liver cirrhosis, and chronic kidney disease – stage 5. The patient is currently under CRRT Dialysis (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy) and on total parenteral nutrition (TPN).
He has been suffering from this disease for 2 years. He has an extremely loving and dedicated wife. However, due to the sudden collapseof her husband’s condition and the currentvegetative state, she is still inshock. She believes her husband is notbeing orally fed on time and no one massages his feet which he loves.
It has been only three days since your first job as an enrolled nurse and you feel you are not completely aware of the organization policies. Hence, when questioned by the wife regarding the status of her husband, you chose to reply diplomatically and asked her to speak to the RN or the consultant physician. Annoyed, she yells at you when she finds you at the canteen. This matter has now reached the public relations manager.
